Progesterone
Test description: Serum progesterone measurement for the evaluation of reproductive function and monitoring of the estrous cycle.
Comments: Important in the reproductive management of female dogs and cats to determine the optimal time for mating, artificial insemination, or egg collection.
- Sample type: Serum
- Species: Canine, Feline
- Recommended volume: 0.7 mL
- Minimum volume: 0.5 mL
- Container: Tube with a red or yellow cap, without a gel separator
- Fasting: 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.
- Rejection Criteria: Incompatible sample or insufficient volume
SHIPPING
Follow the step-by-step instructions in our Pocket Guide.
- Rising progesterone levels indicate a transition from estrus to diestrus.
- The LH surge occurs when progesterone levels are around 2 ng/mL; ovulation occurs when levels reach between 4–10 ng/mL.
- It should be interpreted in conjunction with clinical signs and/or imaging studies (ovarian ultrasound).
Test Method
Chemiluminescent Immunoassay (CLIA).
Exam:
Testosterone
Test description: Serum testosterone level measurement; testosterone is the primary androgen involved in reproductive function and muscle metabolism.
Comments: Indicated for the evaluation of infertility, cryptorchidism, androgen-secreting testicular tumors, and in the investigation of associated endocrine disorders.
- Sample type: Serum
- Species: Canine and Feline
- Recommended volume: 0.7 mL
- Minimum volume: 0.5 mL
- Container: Tube with a red or yellow cap, without a gel separator
- Fasting: 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.
- Rejection Criteria: Hemolyzed sample, sample with a gel separator, or insufficient volume
SHIPPING
Follow the step-by-step instructions in our Pocket Guide.
- Elevated levels may indicate androgen-secreting testicular or adrenal tumors.
- Low levels in breeding animals may indicate testicular insufficiency.
- In cases of cryptorchidism, testosterone levels may remain elevated following stimulation with hCG or GnRH, which aids in diagnosis.
- Always consider clinical signs, reproductive history, and imaging studies.
Test Method
Radioimmunoassay (RIA).
Exam:
Total Testosterone and Free Testosterone
Test description: Measurement of free testosterone, which is biologically active and not bound to plasma proteins.
Comments: Helps provide a more accurate assessment of androgenic activity, and is particularly useful in cases of infertility and when total testosterone levels are borderline.
- Sample type: Serum
- Species: Canine, Feline
- Recommended volume: 0.7 mL
- Minimum volume: 0.5 mL
- Container: Tube with a red or yellow cap, without a gel separator
- Fasting: 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.
- Rejection Criteria: Hemolyzed sample, sample with a gel separator, or insufficient volume
SHIPPING
Follow the step-by-step instructions in our Pocket Guide.
- The free fraction more accurately reflects the physiological effects of testosterone.
- Changes may occur in cases of testicular dysfunction, adrenal disorders, or the use of drugs that interfere with protein binding.
- It should be interpreted in conjunction with total testosterone levels and clinical findings.
Test Method
Radioimmunoassay (RIA).
Exam:
Estradiol
Test description: Serum estradiol (E2) measurement, the primary circulating estrogen produced by ovarian follicles, the placenta, and, in some cases, secretory tumors.
Comments: Test used to assess ovarian function, monitor the estrous cycle, diagnose Sertoli cell tumors, and monitor endocrine disorders.
- Sample type: Serum
- Species: Canine and Feline
- Recommended volume: 0.7 mL
- Minimum volume: 0.5 mL
- Container: Tube with a red or yellow cap, without a gel separator
- Fasting: 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.
- Rejection Criteria: Hemolyzed sample, sample with a gel separator, or insufficient volume
SHIPPING
Follow the step-by-step instructions in our Pocket Guide.
- Females: Levels fluctuate depending on the phase of the estrous cycle; peaks are observed during proestrus and estrus.
- Males: Elevated levels may indicate testicular tumors (e.g., Sertoli cells).
- Changes may also be associated with adrenal dysfunction or estrogen-secreting tumors.
- It should always be interpreted in conjunction with clinical signs, reproductive history, and additional tests.
TEST METHOD
Radioimmunoassay (RIA).
Exam:
Hormone Modulation/Replacement Panel – P4, E2, and Total Testosterone
Test description: Hormone panel that includes serum levels of progesterone (P4), estradiol (E2), and total testosterone.
Comments: Recommended for comprehensive assessment of gonadal hormonal function, monitoring of hormone replacement/modulation protocols, and investigation of endocrine imbalances with reproductive and metabolic implications.
- Sample type: Serum
- Species: Canine, Feline
- Recommended volume: 1.5 mL
- Minimum volume: 1.0 mL
- Container: Tube with a red or yellow cap, without a gel separator
- Fasting: 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.
- Rejection Criteria: Hemolyzed sample, sample with a gel separator, or insufficient volume
SHIPPING
Follow the step-by-step instructions in our Pocket Guide.
- Progesterone (P4): monitoring of the estrous cycle and reproductive support.
- Estradiol (E2): assessment of ovarian function or estrogen-secreting tumors.
- Total testosterone: assessment of testicular function, secretory tumors, and infertility.
Results should always be interpreted in conjunction with the patient’s medical history, additional tests, and the phase of the menstrual cycle.
TEST METHOD
Radioimmunoassay (RIA).
Exam:
Hormone Modulation/Replacement Panel – P4, E2, Total Testosterone, and DHEA-S
Test description: Hormone panel that includes serum levels of progesterone (P4), estradiol (E2), total testosterone, and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S).
Comments: Recommended for a more comprehensive evaluation of the gonadal-adrenal axis, monitoring of hormone replacement/modulation protocols, and investigation of complex endocrine disorders.
- Sample type: Serum
- Species: Canine, Feline
- Recommended volume: 2.0 mL
- Minimum volume: 1.5 mL
- Container: Tube with a red or yellow cap, without a gel separator
- Fasting: 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.
- Rejection Criteria: Hemolyzed sample, sample with a gel separator, or insufficient volume
SHIPPING
Follow the step-by-step instructions in our Pocket Guide.
- Progesterone (P4): reproductive care.
- Estradiol (E2): assessment of ovarian function and secretory tumors.
- Total testosterone: testicular function, infertility, secretory tumors.
- DHEA-S: a marker of adrenal androgen production, important in cases of hormonal imbalance.
The panel provides a comprehensive overview of the gonadal and adrenal axes, aiding in differential diagnosis and the adjustment of replacement therapy protocols.
Test Method
Radioimmunoassay (RIA).
